Two schools in South Los Angeles were placed on lockdown Wednesday afternoon while police investigated a suspicious package at a nearby building, Los Angeles Unified School District officials said.

George Washington Carver Middle School and Sally Ride Elementary School, near the intersection of Vernon and Central avenues, were affected, said Monica Carazo of the LAUSD.

A bomb squad was called the area at 3:30 p.m.

A worker at the South Central Family Health Center said the center received a call that was possibly a threat, and notified LAPD. After officers searched the clinic, employees and patients remained in the building.
