20 Children Develop Infections After Procedures at Anaheim Dental Clinic

The clinic will replace its water system and all equipment that could be a source of mycrobacteria.

Orange County health officials now say 20 children who underwent root canals at an Anaheim dental clinic developed serious infections.

The Orange County Register reported Monday that one of the infections grew so serious that a 7-year-old girl had to have part of her jaw bone and three teeth surgically removed.

The Orange County Health Care Agency said last week that samples from Children's Dental Clinic water system tested positive for mycobacteria. The samples are similar to the kind believed to have infected the children, who all underwent pulpotomies starting in May.

The clinic will replace its water system and all equipment that could be a source of mycrobacteria.

Sam Gruenbaum, CEO of the company that owns the clinic, said last week that screenings of children were ongoing.
