2.8-Magnitude Quake Rattles Newport Beach Area

A magnitude-2.8 earthquake shook the Newport Beach area Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The temblor struck at 9:45 p.m., at a depth of 4.6 miles, about two miles east of the Orange County city, the USGS said.

Twitter users reported feeling the quake in Costa Mesa, Irvine and Orange.

"@NBCLA Felt a quick thud that last literally 1 second on Orange!" @TheeCoachesWay said.

"@NBCLA yup. A little rumble then a jolt here in Westcliff," said user @Drewlos13.

The Costa Mesa Fire Department said it was conducting a visual check of bridges and underpasses for possible cracks or other safety hazards.

Newport Beach police and fire said they had not received reports of injuries or damage.
