Three men were in custody Thursday night after an alleged home burglary attempt in Upland was thwarted by a resident's cell phone app and was followed by a short, high-speed pursuit and a rollover crash, police said.
An Upland resident was out of town when he noticed at around 9:15 p.m. that someone rang his doorbell and looked through the windows of his residence on North Wilson Avenue. He saw the suspect through a cell phone app that was connected to a video doorbell at his house, according to the Upland Police Department.
The resident called police, and when officers arrived, the suspect fled and jumped into a car occupied by two other men, said Lt. Alan Ansara.
"Looks like the suspects were probably spooked, probably by the officer's arrival, and took off before they could actually could do more," Ansara said.
Norbin Chavez, 18; Juan Lugo, 18; and a 17-year-old male led officers in a high-speed pursuit, not long before the vehicle ran a red light on 19th Street and Mountain Avenue and collided into another vehicle, causing it to roll over, police said.
The driver of the other car was hospitalized and was in stable condition.
Officers found a broken window at the residence, police said.
