4-Year-Old Boy Shot in Compton

A 4-year-old boy was in critical, but stable, condition after he was shot in his upper body in East Compton on Wednesday, sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies responded to the area of Compton Boulevard and Lime Avenue in connection with the shooting, which occurred at 11:45 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

Deputies found the boy inside his mother's car. He was shot at least once in the upper torso. Video showed an officer loading the child into a patrol car and taking him to a hospital.

Video from the scene showed an SUV with its rear passenger window shattered.

There were no other victims in the shooting, and it was not immediately clear how the boy wound up being shot, deputies said.

The child was out of surgery by Wednesday night.

Three men were arguing with two others outside a liquor store when at least one of them pulled a gun and six shots were fired, investigators said.

No suspect descriptions have been made available. Two people were detained for questioning, but investigators have not reported any arrests.
