4-Month-Old Dead After Suspected Drunken-Driving Freeway Crash

A 4-month-old girl was fatally injured, three other people were hurt and one of those injured, a 26-year-old Pasadena man, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving in a three-vehicle crash on the northbound Pasadena (110) Freeway in Elysian Park, authorities said.

The collision was reported about 6:40 p.m. Saturday, on the northbound Pasadena Freeway in the tunnels on the Arroyo Seco Parkway just south of the Golden State (5) Freeway, according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The infant girl was found pulse-less and not breathing and was taken to a hospital in grave condition, Humphrey said.

"Unfortunately, the child succumbed to her injuries at the hospital," California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt said.

A 10-year-old La Crescenta girl and 48-year-old Lashawn Stevens also of La Crescenta were hospitalized with moderate injuries. Their current conditions were unknown.

Jared Silvestri, who was arrested, was treated for a minor injury, Humphrey said. They were all taken to Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center.

For undetermined reasons, Stevens, who was driving a 2006 Chrysler, began slowing down and moving toward the right shoulder at the same time a 2001 Chevrolet driven by Silvestri was speeding towards her direction, according to the CHP.

As the Chrysler was slowing and halfway onto the right shoulder, the rear end of the Chrysler was struck by the front end of Silvestri's vehicle.

Both vehicles careened out of control and struck another vehicle, also a 2001 Chevrolet, the CHP said.

The driver of the third vehicle, Andrew Johnson, 35, of Denver, was not injured.

Silvestri was arrested at 7:23 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of felony drunken driving, according to the CHP. He may now face additional charges because the child died.
