A gravel spill blocked lanes on the southbound 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass early Thursday afternoon, creating a traffic jam that extended into the San Fernando Valley.
The spill occurred after a crash, leaving only two lanes open on the southbound 405 Freeway near Skirball Center Drive. The lanes were closed from that location to Getty Center Drive.
The crash was reported at about 11:30 a.m. At noon, a sweeper was clearing debris from the freeway as drivers passed the area through a cloud of dust.
The lanes were expected to reopen in time for the height of the evening commute.
