A man was gunned down while watching television in his garage in what his family believes was a case of mistaken identity. Jane Yamamoto reports for the NBC4 News at 6 on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017. (Published Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017)

A man was fatally shot Friday as he sat in his garage in Compton.

Authorities were called to the 15600 block of South Visalia Avenue at 12:16 a.m.

Derrick Sinclair, 42, died at a hospital, the coroner's office reported.

Detectives believe Sinclair was sitting in his garage watching television when the gunman entered and confronted him, sheriff's Deputy Ryan Rouzan said.

"The suspect accused the victim of being a local gang member and then shot the victim," Rouzan said.

The gunman then fled on foot. A description of the suspect was not released.

Sinclair's daughter Mykayla described the killing as a "senseless act from a coward."

The family says Sinclair was never involved in gangs and lived for his kids.

Anyone with information on the crime was urged to call the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

NBC4's Jane Yamamoto contributed to this report.
