Prosecutors have charged five people with attempted murder in the shooting of a Roman Catholic bishop outside a Riverside County church.

District attorney spokesman John Hall said Tuesday the five men have also been charged with robbery for an alleged crime spree targeting various chain restaurants that spanned nine hours and two counties.

Sheriff's officials have said that Bishop Antonio Garduno was confronted by the defendants in the courtyard of Our Lady of
Tepeyac on Sept. 15 and shot in the stomach. They believe robbery was the motive.

The 51-year-old bishop was hospitalized but is expected to survive.

The five men will be arraigned Sept. 30.
