5-Day ‘Rise Up 4 DACA' Demonstrations Begin

A coalition of civil rights groups began a weeklong series of local events in support of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which may be threatened with extinction under President Donald Trump.

Organized by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and the California Dream Network, in collaboration with young undocumented immigrants, their families and supporters, "Rise Up 4 DACA" will take place through Friday, with events each day in a variety of locations throughout Los Angeles County.

Introduced by former President Barack Obama in 2012, DACA allows people who were brought into the United States illegally as children to work and study in the country without fear of being deported. NBC News, citing several unnamed government officials, reported Friday that President Trump appears likely to end the program soon.

An an event Monday morning at the UCLA Labor Center, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., met with young immigrants and vowed to fight for DACA's survival.

"We will fight to keep the spirit behind DACA alive and to keep the word that was spoken in connection with DACA alive and true," Harris said.
