The Montebello bridge was the site of a massive fuel tanker fire in Dec. 2011 that clogged traffic in the area for days. At the time, officials told NBC 4 that future demolition was a possibility.
Up to two lanes of the eastbound State Route 60 (Pomona Freeway) will be closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27. Westbound lanes are expected to be fully closed from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m.
A wet winter storm may stall the demolition, but Caltrans officials are warning drivers to plan ahead and telling local residents to expect some noise overnight.
The demolition comes months after a tanker carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline caught fire under the overpass. A preliminary investigation indicated the truck’s brakes may have overheated, CHP Officer Vince Ramirez told NBC 4 at the time of the incident.
Significant structural repairs, including the relocation of phone lines, were required at the time, closing the major freeway route for days.
