Strong Winds Knock Down Trees, Continue Into Weekend

Strong winds raked Southern California overnight and into Friday afternoon, downing power lines and trees, fanning a garage fire and leaving tens of thousands of residents with out power.

At one point late Thursday, over 30,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and SoCal Edison customers in Ventura, Los Angeles, Riverside, Santa Barbara and Orange counties were affected as winds with gusts up to 35 mph blasted through the region.

Crews were working through the night to restore service. DWP asked customers to be patient as crews worked "around the clock" to restore power taken out by those major winds.

In windy conditions, 91 firefighters battled a blaze in a converted garage early Friday on West 39th Place in Exposition Park. The fire, knocked down in just 38 minutes, spread to nearby debris and vegetation, including palm trees, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Winds with gusts up to 60 mph were blamed for felling several trees and branches that took down power lines. A tree branch fell onto power lines in Van Nuys and sparks could be seen flying from wires in East Los Angeles.

In downtown Los Angeles, gusts took down a traffic light pole, snapping it at its base, at the southwest corner of Main and First streets. In Inglewood, a fallen tree damaged two cars but missed power lines.

Gusts up to 38 mph grounded flights at Los Angeles International Airport.

Winds will continue to blow out of the northwest and north until late Friday, according to NBC4 forecaster Fritz Coleman. From late Friday into Saturday morning, the winds will shift and blow out of the northeast as a Santa Ana wind.

The stongest gusts will reach up to 45 to 60 mph in the canyons and passes, Coleman said. The winds are expected to peak Saturday morning.

The Santa Ana winds will also drive temperatures up on Saturday, when the coast could hit the mid-80s, and the warmest temperatures in the valleys could reach the low to mid-90s.
