$75,000 Reward Offered for a Killer's Arrest

A $75,000 reward was being offered for the arrest of the person or people who killed Jose Andres Escobar.

Escobar, 19, and a friend were in the area of Crenshaw Boulevard and 59th Street around 7 a.m. on Jan. 19 collecting aluminum cans. Someone drove up to Escobar and shouted, "Where you from?" before firing a handgun at Escobar and his friend.

Escobar died at a hospital.

"You don't ask somebody where you're from if you're not a gangster talking gangster," said Det. Chris Barling of the Los Angeles Police Department.

LAPD is asking for the public's help in finding the suspect, who was caught on surveillance video shooting Escobar and his friend.

A nearby homeowner's security camera recorded the shooting, which detectives have already viewed.

Esobar's mother was still grieving Escobar and called the murder suspect "a coward."

Lt. Barling said the suspect doesn't care about what he allegedly did or if anyone saw him.

"A gang member who does something like this is empowered within his own gang, he's also empowered by the fear of the community who doesn't come forward and say something," he said.
