Family members were happy to be alive and feeling like they should clean out their garage more often after they discovered two Korean War-era rockets in the detached garage of their Glassell Park home. The rockets had gone unnoticed for decades.

Officers were called to 4040 Verdugo Road around 10:20 a.m. after the family reported finding a "military device," and remained there after 4:30 p.m., said Officer Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.

The man thought the devices were toys until his son, who had worked with explosives with the U.S. Army, identified one of the rockets as "high explosive."

"You'd be surprised what you find in your garage. Yeah, we were surprised all right," said the son.

The family had been living in the home for 30 years and believes the previous owners left behind the devices.

The Los Angeles bomb squad turned the explosives over to military personnel, who are expected to dispose of them.

A family member said they felt like this was their lucky day, and that they planned to go out and buy lottery tickets.
