Adam Sandler received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Adam Sandler received the 2,431st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday, honoring a career which has seen his films gross more than $3 billion worldwide.

The ceremony came 10 days before the release of Sandler's latest film, "Just Go With It,'' in which he portrays a successful plastic surgeon who pretends to be married in order to attract women.

Born Sept. 9, 1966, in Brooklyn, N.Y. and raised in Manchester, N.H., Sandler began working as a stand-up comedian when he was 17 years old. Sandler began his television career in 1987 with the recurring role of Theo Huxtable's friend Smitty on "The Cosby Show.''

Sandler was hired as a writer on ``Saturday Night Live'' in 1990 and became a cast member the following year, remaining with the show through 1995. He is best remembered on "Saturday Night Live'' for such original songs as "The Chanukah Song.''

Sandler's first film leading role was in the 1995 comedy "Billy Madison.'' He went on to star in many films including "Happy Gilmore," "The Wedding Singer," and "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry."

Sandler also has recorded five comedy albums, two of which were certified as double platinum and two others as gold records, and received two Grammy Award nominations.
