Father Arrested in Connection With Accidental Shooting Death of 7-Year-Old Boy

Authorities announced the arrest of a man in connection with the fatal shooting of his 7-year-old son in San Bernardino County Thursday.

The Adelanto boy's death is being called an accident, but his father, Julio Cervantes Sr., was arrested Friday on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies placed Cervantes under arrest at 3:30 a.m., according to a news release.

The boy, Daniel Cervantes, died just before 6 p.m. Thursday, about an hour after the Adelanto Police Department was called to the scene of the shooting, a home in the 18000 block of Bellflower Street, deputies said.

Homicide detectives determined that Daniel was accidentally shot by his father. Cervantes was booked into the High Desert Detention Center on charges of involuntary manslaughter.

"Any gun owner is responsible for their weapon, for the safe keeping of their weapon," Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.

Neighbors said the family had recently moved to the home from New Mexico.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the shooting to call 909-387-3589 or anonymously at 800-782-7463.
