Southern California is withering under a weekend heat wave that authorities say will be accompanied by poor air quality.
A heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for a large swath of the region is in place through Sunday night.
Temperatures are expected to reach from the mid-90s (35 Celsius) into the 100-degree (37.8-Celsius) range in many valley and mountain areas.
The desert areas southeast of Los Angeles are under an excessive-heat warning.
Air quality officials have issued an ozone advisory for much of greater Los Angeles, warning the heat will combine with atmospheric inversions to trap smog close to the ground.
Temperatures should start to cool by Monday.
The rest of the state is also warming but there are no advisories or warnings.
