Alleged Burglar Climbs Roof

A Venice neighborhood was locked down for several hours Friday as police surrounded a three-story apartment building after a suspected burglar climbed onto a roof to elude capture, officials said.

Police received a report of a burglary around 6 a.m. Friday near Sixth and Vernon avenues, officials said.

The burglary suspect climbed onto the roof as authorities surrounded the complex.

The man -- donning a cap and shorts and occasionally a shirt -- paced back and forth on the roof, occasionally talking to officers.

At one point, it appeared the man was laying down.

About 9:20 a.m., the man hopped off the roof to a lower walkway.

He placed his hands over his head and approached police before being taken into custody.
