A 13-year-old girl trying to catch her school bus to Harvard-Westlake Middle School on Friday was struck by two vehicles and pronounced dead at a hospital, according to the police.
Julia Siegler was crossing Sunset Boulevard against a red light at Cliffwood Avenue when she was struck, according to the coroner's office, Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department Officer Sara Faden.
The eighth-grader was grazed by one car, and that knocked her into the path of a second vehicle driven by a juvenile -- all in front of her mother, according to the police.
Julia "attempted to run across the street when she unfortunately was struck by the first driver, who appeared to brush the victim with the right side view mirror, causing the victim to lose her balance," said Capt. Nancy Lauer.
"She was then struck by a second vehicle being driven by a juvenile," Lauer said. "The juvenile ran over the victim."
The drivers of both vehicles, a Toyota Highlander and an Infiniti, stopped to render aid and remained at the scene until an ambulance took the girl away, Faden said.
Both drivers were interviewed by police, but neither was cited in connection with what Faden said was "a horrific accident."
Grief counselors were on the Harvard-Westlake campus on Friday, and a estimated crowd of 150 attended a candlelight vigil at the crash scene Friday night, according to broadcast reports.
