Free Annual Health Fair Draws Hundreds in Anaheim

Hundreds of people were expected to attend a free annual health fair in Anaheim beginning Saturday.

More than 150 doctors and health care professionals will volunteer their time to provide health screenings to family members of all ages at the 10th Annual Anaheim Free Health Fair. The fair is open to the public and welcomes those with or without health insurance.

Since 2007, more than 8,000 people have benefited from the free event, which is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Children like Elaine Rios and her brother Alexander were among the many who came to the fair. They needed glasses, and their mother, a florist in Koreatown, does not get health insurance that covers eye exams.

"It's undescribable. To help is the ultimate form of happiness," said volunteer Dr. Nitin Shah.

For Elaine and Alexander, getting an eye exam and glasses at last will finally allow them to see the blackboard at school. They are just one of the families being helped by this event.

"The Anaheim Health Fair is a great example of volunteerism and helping our fellow neighbors,"  Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait said in a news release.

"When people come together good things will happen. Hundreds of volunteers serve hundreds of attendees in need of quality medical attention. My thanks go to the doctors, health care professionals and volunteers for making this event possible."

The event is being held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Anaheim Convention Center located at 800 Katella Avenue.
