Armed Man Shoots Self, Barricades Family Inside Santa Monica Home

An armed man shot himself after barricading his wife and two children inside their home Wednesday night in Santa Monica, police said.

Officers responded to reports of shots fired around 11:26 p.m. in the 800 block of Bay Avenue, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found a taxi driver who said a man fired shots at him after the driver dropped off the man and his wife. The driver said the couple went inside after arriving at the home and went inside to bring money to pay for their taxi fare, according to Santa Monica Police Department.

After shooting at the taxi driver, the man barricaded himself inside the home with his wife and two children, including a 2-year-old baby and an infant.

About 30 minutes into a standoff with police, dispatch received a call from the man's wife who said he had shot himself, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

Officers entered the home and found the man with an apparent, self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The wife and two children were safely removed from the home.

The man was transported to a hospital in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.
