Arraignment Postponed For Man Charged in Soldier Shooting

Accused shooter Ruben Ray Jurado's arraignment to take place Thursday morning

The arraignment for a man charged in the shooting of a soldier who had just returned from Afghanistan has been postponed until Thursday morning in San Bernardino County Superior Court.

Ruben Ray Jurado, 19, declined a video arraignment Wednesday on one count of premeditated attempted murder for allegedly shooting Army Spec. Christopher Sullivan at his own homecoming party.

"He wants to be present at all stages," said Jurado's attorney Michael Holmes.
Police arrested Jurado on Monday after he turned himself in at the Chino Hills Sheriff's Station, joined by an attorney.

Sullivan, 22, was at his welcome home party Friday night in the 2800 block of North Garner Avenue when he tried to break up an argument that involved his brother. He was shot in the neck and buttocks, according to his mother.

By Monday evening, Sullivan was reportedly paralyzed and on life support.

“He went to defend his brother and the guy pulled out a gun,” said his mother Suzanne Sullivan.

That argument was over football, according to police.

"We do know that there were some words over something as silly as differences in NFL football teams, which led to a brief physical confrontation and then, culminated in the shooting," said Sgt. Gary Robertson with the San Bernardino Police Department.

“I heard a lot of yelling, then a pop and I could tell, I knew it was a gun,” said neighbor Cyndi Jasper.

After surrendering, Jurado was treated for an unknown injury and jailed.

"There was a fight," said Holmes. "My client was struck first, was down on the ground, and was being kicked."

Sullivan was recovering from a suicide bombing attack that occurred last December in Afghanistan. He is a Purple Heart recipient.

The investigation is being handled by the San Bernardino Police Station. Jurado is being held on $1 million bail.
