Arrest of Murder Suspect Slight Comfort for Homeless

News of the arrest of a suspect in the serial killings of four homeless men since late December, came as a slight reassurance for many who live on local streets.

Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Tuesday to announce charges against Itzcoatl Ocampo, the 23-year-old man expected to be charged with four counts of murder in the serial killings of four homeless men since late December.

On Monday night, news of the arrest came as a slight reassurance for many who live on local streets.

"I feel safer. I never ever feel completely safe, but I feel safer knowing I don't have to worry about being stabbed in my sleep," says John Simeone, who is homeless.

"The term out here is 51-50. That means, loonies. There's so many of 'em running around here. I'm not terribly scared myself," according to homeless man, Peter Cunningham.

The restaurant drive-up lane where the fourth and final victim John Berry was attacked is now a shrine to his memory.

Monday night mourners wondered about the suspect, and what punishment he might face if he's convicted.

"I would be very strongly to probably say, the death penalty," according to Brenda Renbarger of Yorba Linda.

"The fact he was in the military too, maybe that had something to do with it, maybe it didn't," says Kevin Christensen, also of Yorba Linda. "To me there's no excuse, and there's no reason for what he did."
