Forget Beverly Hills. La Verne, California! That's the place you ought to be.
CNN just declared Monday as "Bloody Monday" for the day's loss of 50,000 jobs at six companies. The state of California is in such a financial fix it's readying taxpayers for the possibility that they'll receive IOUs in place of refund checks this year. And the Los Angeles Unified School District is looking at a budget shortfall that could top $400 million.
But in little La Verne, located near Pomona in east Los Angeles County, the city manager just got a raise.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports at its "Leftovers from City Hall" blog that La Verne City Manager Martin R. Lomeli was recently approved by a 4-1 vote of the City Council to receive a 10 percent pay increase, which means his monthly pay will jump from $14,741 to $16,215.
That's an annual increase of nearly $18,000 for a total of $194,580 a year.
Lomeli was reportedly "very grateful."
La Verne has a population of about 32,000 people, and, apparently, a healthy crop of money trees.
