Authorities Pursue Driver in Montebello Area Before Occupants Bail on Foot

Police pursued a vehicle in the Montebello area Wednesday evening before the driver and passengers bailed out of the vehicle on foot.

The pursuit began in the Downey area, and at one point was on the 5 Freeway, was later determined to be in connection with the fatal shooting of a Downey police officer earlier Wedneday.

When the driver exited the freeway, the car was blowing through stop signs. The pursuit came to an end at Washington Boulevard and Carob Way when three occupants bailed out of the car on foot.

Officers could be seen via NewsChopper4 canvassing the area as they searched for the driver and passengers. 

At least five people were taken into custody in connection with the shooting early Thursday.

The officer was identfied as 29-year-old Ricky Galvez, a Marine who served two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan and joined the police department in 2006 as a police aide. He was hired as an officer in the community southeast of downtown Los Angeles in March 2010.
