Burbank police investigate the case of a boxer who died after sparring at a Burbank gym on July 27, 2012. He ruptured his spleen and suffered internal bleeding, according to an autopsy released Sept. 25, 2012.
A 16-year-old boxer from North Hollywood died in July after rupturing his spleen from blunt force trauma to the abdomen, according to an autopsy report released on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office released the findings into the July 26 death of Raul Alvarez Jr.
Alvarez Jr. died at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center after a "touch" sparring session with a 19-year-old boxing partner who was new to Pullmans Gym in Burbank, according to an account of the incident in the Los Angeles County Coroner's autopsy report.
Alvarez, who had been wearing head gear, gloves, a mouthpiece and a protective cup in the groin area, told hospital officials that he did not eat much during the day and felt weak and dizzy, according to the autopsy report.
He laid down to rest, but when he didn't feel better after an hour, 911 was called, the report said.
At the hospital, he sat up in bed and said, "I am going to die, please tell my dad that I love him," the report said, adding, "I love you. I am sorry for all the trouble I have caused you. I love you."
Alvarez became unconscious and died 7:27 p.m., after efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
