Oakland Zoo Welcomes Three Baby Meerkats

The Oakland Zoo put out the word on Monday about the three new meerkat pups officials are welcoming into the fold.

The pups are six weeks old and bring the size of the zoo's exhibit to eight. They are named Ayo, Rufaro and Nandi, which are African names for Joy, Happiness and Sweet.

The genders of the meerkats at this point are unknown.

Meerkats belong to the mongoose family, and live in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, Africa. A group of meerkats is called a mob, gang or clan. In captivity, meerkats live up to 14 years, and about half that in the wild.
