BLM Suspends Permits for Race Promoters

Suspension to continue during Accident Investigation

The Bureau of Land Management Thursday suspended the land use permits for Mojave Desert Racing Productions.

They organized last weekend's California 500 in Lucerne Valley in which eight people died when a truck flipped onto spectators. The BLM decided to suspend the permit for MDR Productions while an investigation into the crash was underway.

Both the promoter and BLM have been criticized for allowing spectators to get so close.

Video of the crash showed spectators standing along the edge of the narrow dirt course as trucks sped by.

Other off-road races in the desert will continue on a case-by-case basis.
