Barn Owls Becoming Web Sensation

A webcam captures them as they await six eggs to hatch

People who give a hoot about birds are getting quite a thrill from the live feed of a pair of barn owls about to hatch six chicks.

A webcam is focused on the birds who are nesting in a 100-foot tall eucalyptus tree near the headquarters of Audubon California Starr Ranch Sanctuary.

Sanctuary Manager Pete DeSimone decided to focus the camera on the birds rather than have to sit out in the brush to keep an eye on them.

The ranch is a 4,000-acre preserve that’s been home to a whole host of animals since 1973.

This particular pair of owls hatched seven chicks last year.

“A lot of people like to watch these guys and see what they do,” said DeSimone.

“It’s a really wonderful crowd that’s watching. They are exchanging information,” he said.

He added that  “some are pretty excited because the first egg is expected to hatch next week.”

Anyone can access the webcam by going to the sanctuary’s website.
