Gunman Who Barricaded Himself Inside Home Found Dead

An armed man who burst into a residence in the City Terrace area of the county Tuesday and got into a gunfight with one of three people inside the home was later was found dead, authorities said.

The home invasion occurred about 8 a.m. in the 3600 block of Floral Drive, according to the sheriff's department. A SWAT team entered the residence late this morning and found the man dead of at least one gunshot wound.

His name was withheld pending notification of his relatives. According to the preliminary investigation, the suspect entered the home, which was occupied by three residents, and began fighting with one of them, said Deputy Caroline Rodriguez.

"The second victim ... armed himself with his personal weapon, (and) went upstairs, and at that time a gunfight ensued between the suspect and the victim,'' Rodriguez said.

The victims then ran outside, and the suspect remained inside, Rodriguez said. A SWAT team and crisis negotiators were summoned to the scene, and some evacuations were ordered in the area.

One of the victims suffered a gunshot wound to his upper body, Rodriguez said. Another victim suffered an unspecified injury to his lower body. Both were taken to a hospital.

Sheriff's officials could not immediately confirm reports from the scene that the barricaded suspect was a 24-year-old man whose former girlfriend lives in the residence.
