Man Found Dead in Garage After Hourslong Barricade in South Gate

A barricade situation that prompted evacuations and street closures came to an end Friday morning after a man was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wounds at a South Gate home, officials said.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 4000 block of Santa Ana around 12:30 a.m., according to the South Gate Police Department. After evacuating residents, one person was unaccounted for, police said.

A SWAT team was called out to the home to assist in the barricade. 

Shortly after 7:30 a.m., the man was found inside the home's garage suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, South Gate police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Several homes were temporarily evacuated but the area was deemed safe shortly before 8 a.m.

Santa Ana Street was closed between Otis Street and San Luis Avenue during the investigation, police said. 

No further details were immediately available.
