Burbank High School Baseball Coach Accused of Sexual Relationship With Minor

The alleged victim told police the relationship began when she was 15

A 28-year-old baseball coach at a Burbank high school was arrested Friday after a 17-year-old female student told police they had been in a sexual relationship lasting over two years.

The alleged victim told police Thursday evening that she and John Banuelos Jr., an assistant baseball coach for the varsity team at John Burroughs High School, had been in an on-going "consensual" sexual relationship, according to the Burbank Police Department.

Officers arrested Banuelos the following day at a Ralph's supermarket parking lot. He was booked on several sex-related charges involving a minor, including sexual relations, oral copulation, lewd acts, police said.

"Most of the crimes include the element that Banuelos was over 21 years of age and the victim was under 16 at the time of the acts," Sgt. Claudio Losacco said in a news release.

He also faces a charge of a loaded firearm in public because he was allegedly carrying a gun at the time of his arrest.

Banuelos was being held on $325,000 bail. He's set to appear in court Tuesday morning.

The Burbank Unified School District said Banuelos is no longer employed with the school or the district.

Banuelos is also a part-time city employee at Burbank's Parks and Recreation department.
