Bat-Wielding Man Arrested After Police Standoff

A man wielding a baseball bat was arrested in downtown Los Angeles after an hours-long standoff with police.

The man told police that he would not surrender without officers shooting, and forced the closing of Spring Street between Temple and Aliso as he paced in front of the LA Hall of Justice, bat in hand.

After negotiations with police, the man surrendered peacefully.

Police did not know the man's motive, nor the contents of a backpack he was carrying, said a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson.

Authorities think the man was the same person responsible for breaking display cases at the Metro Green Line station before the standoff. He faces felony vandalism charges, officials said.

Deputies think the man may have attempted to assault people while taking the train downtown and are asking that potential victims come forward.
