Peace and Unity was the theme Monday night at the 7th annual Leimert tree lighting ceremony.
A huge 65-foot conifer coined the "Peace & Unity Tree" was lit at 5:30 p.m. inside Leimert Park Village at the corner of 43rd Place and Degnan Boulevard.
The Crenshaw High School Choir, the Lula Washington Dance Theater and the Leimert Park Drummer's Alliance performed at the celebration.
Councilmember Bernard C. Parks' wife, Bobbie, founded the event in 2003. The "Peace and Unity Tree" is the center of South L.A.'s holiday activities.
The event included the lighting of all the trees in Leimert Park and along Degnan Boulevard. This year, the Parks plans to distribute more than 5,000 toys in a “snow village” at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza.
