Busy Bear Takes Late-Night Walk From Glendale to Tujunga

The bear's three-hour tour included a stop in La Crescenta

Everywhere a bear went, patrol car lights and sirens seemed to follow late Wednesday night during a low-speed pursuit that stretched from Glendale to Tujunga with a detour through La Crescenta.

The bear wandered through the three neighborhoods, climbing walls, crossing Foothill Boulevard and pausing several times to investigate bushes, rocks and anything else that captured its interest. The three-hour journey ended when it was scared off by police patrol car sirens.

The first call regarding the bear was received at about 11 a.m. Wednesday. Police spotted the bear, estimated at 500 pounds, near Glen Cove Avenue and Santa Carlotta Street.

Officers followed the bear as it ambled south across Foothill Boulevard, then east into La Crescenta. The bear turned northwest and headed toward Tujunga at about 12:30 a.m.

It was last seen at about 1 a.m.

"This is like the second one we've had in six months," said Lt. Bruce Fox of the Glendale Police Department. "This doesn't happen that often."

Fox recommends that residents in the area make sure their garbage cans are sealed and closed and advises not to leave any food out.

If you see the bear, contact the Glendale Police Department to report the sighting at (818) 548-4840.
