Child Walks From Home During Bell Gardens SWAT Standoff

The boy walked to safety behind SWAT members and armored vehicles after hours inside the home

A boy walked out of a Bell Gardens home early Monday during an hourslong standoff involving SWAT members and an individual possibly wanted in connection with an arrest warrant.

Deputies responded at about 4 a.m. to the home near Live Oak Street and Ira Avenue, about 10 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. SWAT members positioned armored vehicles in front of the residence and neighbors evacuated.

Aerial video showed a boy dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans walk out of the home just before 7 a.m. The child walked alone from the front door and across a lawn to a group of deputies in SWAT gear. One of the deputies knelt in the street to speak with the boy behind an armored vehicle.

The boy was one of five people in the house at the start of the standoff.

"They told us to come out, one by one," said Leslie Navarro, the subject's sister.

The standoff ended at about 9 a.m. with the suspect, wanted in connection with a shooting last week, in custody. Officers threw tear gas inside the home before entering and arresting the suspect.
