Two Bell police vehicles collided Thursday, leaving an officer trapped inside a vehicle pinned against a telephone pole for almost 30 minutes, police said.

Fire crews were at the scene of the crash near Heliotrope and Filmore avenues around 3:15 a.m., said Los Angeles County fire dispatch Supervisor Rey Dong.

The officers were responding to a call regarding an auto theft in progress when the collision occurred.

The crash left one officer trapped inside his car wedged between a telephone pole and the top of the other vehicle, said Lt. Ty Henshaw of the Bell Police Department.

"The officer was hospitalized in unknown condition, but he was conscious and speaking with medical personnel at the scene,'' Henshaw said.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by an independent agency, Henshaw said.

The names of the officers involved were withheld.
