Bicyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run in Pomona

Police search for the driver who hit a 44-year-old man and dragged him half a block

A Pomona man was struck and killed by an SUV Wednesday night that dragged him half a block before fleeing the scene.

Pomona police say Gabriel Perez, 44, was riding his bicycle home from work during the evening rush hour. As he attempted to cross Towne Avenue on Sixth Street, a dark green Chrysler or Dodge SUV hit Perez and dragged him half a block before driving off.

"I want to ask that person – why didn't he help at that moment? Why did he leave?” said Patty Cardenas, Perez’ wife. “Maybe there was a chance my husband still be alive."

Cardenas is now faced with the challenge of telling her 8-year-old daughter about her husband’s death. So far, she’s isolated her from hearing the news.

"Oh what can I say! What can I say! Tell me!” said Cardenas. “He was loving. Loving to his daughter. Right now I don't know how I am going to tell her about this!"

Police say the SUV involved in the crash should have major front damage. There is no description of the driver.

Because the accident occurred on a busy street, Pomona police are hopeful someone will come forward. If you have any information about the crash or the driver, you are asked to call the Pomona Police Department’s Traffic Division at (909) 620-2081.
