Big Rig Crash Causes Freeway Explosion

The flames were huge as oil leaked from a big rig following a crash on the 210 Foothill Freeway Thursday morning in Azusa.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver somehow lost control of the double-load semi and caused it to jack-knife in the eastbound lanes.  The impact against the center median caused the semi, hauling gravel, to ignite.  The CHP says the driver tried to put the fire out on his own with an extinguisher but firefighters had to come in to finish it off.

The eastbound lanes remained closed through the morning rush and the westbound lanes began to slow at sunrise.  Eastbound drivers were being rerouted at Irwindale for travel on Foothill Boulevard and Gladstone Street.

No word if the driver will be cited.
