Big Rig Overturns on 15 Freeway, Driver Killed

A trucker was killed Monday when his big rig overturned and erupted in flames after colliding with a car on Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore.

The crash happened around 11 a.m. on southbound I-15, near Lake Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Sigalert issued at 11:19 a.m. remained in effect, with one lane of the freeway closed in the area of the collision.

The big rig driver's identity was not immediately released.

According to the CHP, the truck and a passenger vehicle wrecked, causing the rig to go off the road, jack-knife and catch fire. A pedestrian walking along the freeway was struck, suffering critical injuries, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The condition of the person driving the car couldn't be confirmed.

Fire crews were able to quickly contain the flames consuming the 18- wheeler, which was hauling flour, some of which spilled.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
