Birds Shot Through Neck With Blow Darts in Newport Beach: Police

Police in Newport Beach are asking for the public's help to find those responsible of wounding several birds with what authorities believe to be blow darts.

In recent weeks, three Heermann's gulls and one Mallard duck have been shot through the neck by orange arrow-like projectiles, according to the Newport Police Department. Police suspect there may be more birds wounded by the darts.

Investigators believe the animals were wounded with blow darts, approximately 8 inches in length, used in conjunction with a blowgun.

Possession, use, or sale of a blowgun or darts is a violation of California state law, officials said.

Because the birds are still able to fly, Animal Control officers have had difficulty capturing them for medical treatment.

Authorities urge anyone who sees an injured bird to report the animal's location immediately by caling 949-644-3717 and do not approach or attempt to capture the bird.

Anyone with information regarding those involved in the cruel activity is asked to call 949-644-3688 ext. 2716.
