Man Found Shot to Death Along San Gabriel Riverbed

Sheriff's homicide detectives were investigating the shooting death of a man whose body was found at the bottom of an embankment in the San Gabriel Riverbed on Saturday morning.

A couple walking on a path about 10:30 a.m. discovered the man lying in the fetal position in the riverbed north of Carson Street in Lakewood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

"The husband walked over to the body and saw he was unresponsive, and saw that he was bleeding," sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez said.

When deputies arrived, they found the man suffering from a single gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives were looking into the possibility that he was lured to the riverbed.

Officials said the man was 24 years old. They did not release his name because his family had not been notified of his death.

A sheriff's bloodhound was called in to help deputies search for clues in the surrounding area.

Kendall Pancorba, who was near the trail Saturday, was surprised somebody didn't see something suspicious going on along the busy bike path.

"It's kind of crazy but you would think someone would notice it or hear something, see something," she said.
