‘Pipe-Like' Device Prompts Evacuations in Fullerton

Residents in Fullerton were evacuated as a precaution Monday while the bomb squad investigated a suspicious package that turned out to be harmless.

Someone spotted the item on a sidewalk in the 3300 block of North Euclid Street in Fullerton at 8:42 a.m. and notified police.

A bomb squad robot blew up the cylindrical item that was 18 inches long, 4 inches in diameter and capped on both ends. There were no explosive components in the cylindrical item, police said.

"While fortunately no explosive components were found in this item," police said in a news release. "We remind residents to remain vigilant and if they 'see something, say something.'"

The incident prompted officials to temporarily shut down streets and evacuate homes.

The news comes during a heightened alert as officials in New York announced the arrest of a man sought in New York-area bombings that rocked a New York City neighborhood and a New Jersey shore town.
