Arrest Made in Echo Park Hit-and-Run That Injured Teens

An arrest has been made in an Echo Park hit-and-run crash that injured two teenage skateboarders, one of them critically, police said Saturday night.

A 28-year-old man who lives in the San Fernando Valley was arrested in connection with the case, Los Angeles Police Department officials said. His name was not released.

The 13- and 15-year-old skateboarders were struck by a white minivan near the intersection of Montrose and Alvarado streets at around 10 p.m. Friday, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesmsan said.

The 15-year-old was taken to the hospital in a critical condition by ambulance, while the younger boy was transported by his father. The latter victim suffered moderate to serious injuries, but is in a stable condition, police said.

"They were crossing in an unmarked crosswalk but they had the right to be crossing the street there and they were hit by a car," said LAPD Lt. Melody Hainline.

The minivan sustained front end damage, with one of the headlights smashing during the collision. Police said it was recovered during the arrest.

Hainline suspected that the driver should have known he hit the teenagers.
