Councilman Passes Sobriety Test in Boyle Heights Crash, Office Says

Councilman Jose Huizar was involved in a crash in Boyle Heights Thursday night, according to LAPD.

Huizar's office released the following statement:

"Councilmember Huizar was involved in a minor traffic accident this evening near 1st and Boyle near his home in Boyle Heights. LAPD gave the Councilmember a DUI sobriety test, which of course he passed. The Councilmember is glad that nobody was seriously injured."

The councilman was headed east on First Street near Boyle, when he rear-ended another vehicle, according to the watch commander at LAPD Central Traffic. That car then hit a third vehicle.

The crash occured at about 6:45 p.m. It was initially being investigated as a possible DUI.

"At dinner, I had one drink, but it was a few hours before," Huizar said. "We obviously take these things very seriously, as an elected official as somone who constantly reminds people about safe driving."

Huizar, 44, represents Council District 14, which stretches from Downtown LA to Eagle Rock and includes Boyle Heights, El Sereno and Highland Park. He was elected in 2005.
