A 16-year-old boy was arrested after allegeldy setting a fire in Yucaipa.
The brushfire quickly burned through 200 acres of grass near Yucaipa in San Bernardino County as temperatures in inland Southern California soared.
Witnesses told deputies that they saw a male juvnile leaving the location at which the blaze started. The suspect was taken to the San Bernardino Juvenile Hall facility where he was booked for arson.
State Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Bill Peters said the fire started Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Peters said the flames crested a ridge and could threaten the community of Mentone.
He said the foothills are covered with grass, which burns less intensely than dense chaparral.
While winds are light, firefighters are still concerned because of the high heat and low humidity.
At least 120 firefighters, four helicopters and five airtankers are fighting the flames.
No homes are threatened.
