Burglars Target La Mirada Homes

Police were investigating three home burglaries in La Mirada that happened within an hour Tuesday.

One burglary was reported at 1 p.m. at Calle de Maya and Foster Road. A second one happened 5 minutes later. A third case was reported at Ocaso Avenue, about a two-minute walk away, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

It's rare that these happened in the same area on the same day, deputies said.

Brothers Dale and Rob Nordberg said their house was burglarized. It was vacant for two years since their mother died.

"I thought somebody was in my house," Dale Norberg said. "I called 911 and walked across the street and waited."

Cabinet doors were opened and bedrooms were ransacked but the Norbergs aren't sure what was taken.

Marcy Mannan's house was also burglarized.

The burglars smashed through her front door, taking whatever jewelry they could find. They took a pillow case off a pillow to stuff loot in, Mannan said.

Deputies said the break-ins happened so quickly they had to drive through the neighborhood searching for witnesses. They hope to uncover fingerprints.

Mannan has another plan.

"We've had a big dog until just the last month or so," she said. "We will now have another big dog."

Here's what police advise:

  • Trim hedges so there is a clean line of sight from the street to your front door.
  • Use motion sensor lights and lock side gates.
  • Do whatever you can to make your home less inviting and not give burglars a place to hide.
