Bus Crashes Off 405 Freeway in Van Nuys

A bus with only the driver aboard crashed through a guard rail and off of the 405 Freeway Monday, snarling traffic amid the afternoon commute, the Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed.

The transit bus crashed off the southbound 405 Freeway just north of Sherman Way at 4:15 p.m. Monday, fire officials said.

Five people were hurt, but none of the injuries are life-threatening, the California Highway Patrol said.

The woman behind the wheel walked off the bus with a gash to her leg, and was assessed at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that collided with the bus was also being treated.

Traffic was backed up near Roscoe Boulevard and Sherman Way.

All lanes were set to reopen around 6:30 p.m., CHP said.

The cause of the wreck was still under investigation, but on one of the vehicles involved -- not the bus -- a tire blew out, according to the CHP.

CHP said the crash could have ended in disaster as the bus narrowly missed a homeless camp.
