Driver Arrested After Pursuit Ends in Police Station Parking Lot

The driver of a pickup truck in a high-speed pursuit was arrested Tuesday when he pulled into the parking lot of a police station in Pomona.

The driver, identified as Hector Ruiz, was allegedly on the phone with his lawyer when he pulled a Toyota Tacoma into the parking lot of a Pomona police station just after 11 a.m.

"I turned around and he had his hands up," said Angela Peralta, a witness who was sitting inside the station when the suspect gave up. "He didn't say nothing. He had his hands up and turned around."

Inside the truck, police said they found a gun and bullets. Police suspect that is why he ran.

It is surprising to Scott Jennings, Ruiz's boss and owns the truck Ruiz was driving.

"I can't believe it," Jennings said. "I wouldn't suspect that from him."

Jennings said Ruiz has worked for him for three years, calls him a family man with at least two kids.

He said he is surprised Ruiz would take off from police, even more surprised to hear Ruiz had a gun with him.

"He has been great around me, responsible, a good guy," Jennings said.

The chase started at 10:15 a.m. The driver was wanted for failure to yield and traffic violations, said Officer Edgar Figueroa, of the California Highway Patrol.

The pursuit traveled at speeds up to 90 mph on the 210 Freeway before it wound up on surface streets in Pomona.
