Man Tries to Run Over CHP Officers After Brief Pursuit

The man struck one police officer on his motorcycle and attempted to run over a second in an Orange parking lot, officials said.

A driver tried to run over two California Highway Patrol officers Thursday morning, after he led them on a brief pursuit when he refused to pull over his car.

The man was driving southbound on the Golden State (5) Freeway in Orange at about 10:45 a.m. when a CHP officer attempted to pull him over for a speeding violation, said Tom Joy, a CHP spokesman.

When the man would not pull over, another officer on a motorcycle joined in the pursuit, and the man led both officers off of the freeway at Disney Way, officials said.

After some U-turns the pursuit ended near Chapman Avenue and The City Drive, CHP officials said.

The man struck one police officer on his motorcycle and attempted to run over a second in a parking lot, Joy said.

An officer then opened fire as the man drove out of the parking lot. The man rounded the corner and pulled over, officials said.

Joy said the man was not hit and was taken into custody without incident.

Detective Jeremy Smith of the Orange Police Department is investigating the incident and asks any witnesses to call 714-744-7456.
